Recently, Midland Power completed its new four-year work plan, which includes implementing Automated Meter Reading (AMR), also known as Automated Meter Intelligence/Interrogation (AMI). Midland Power has completed an AMR pilot project that included installation of equipment at the Squaw Valley and Garden City substations; setup of a communication link from the substations to the Jefferson office; addition of software at the office; and installation of new meters at homes and businesses served by these substations.

Due to the success of the pilot, phase one of AMR installation began on April 7, 2008, in the northeastern part of Midland Power's service territory.  This phase will last several months and involve the installation of 3,100 AMR units.
